In the Company of Cheerful Ladies
by Alexander McCall Smith
Book Review by Amy Coffin
Precious Ramotswe is back for a sixth installment of the charming series by Alexander McCall Smith. The proprietor of the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency recently married Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni of Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors. There’s no time or money for a honeymoon, however, and it’s back to business in Gaborone, Botswana.

A man from Mma Ramotswe’s past returns to cause trouble. His presence is disturbing, and the “traditionally built” detective must decide whether or not to succumb to his blackmail attempt. Other issues faced in this installment include the abrupt departure of an apprentice at Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors and an intruder at the house on Zebra Drive. A new employee/character is introduced as well.

In the Company of Cheerful Ladies is just as delightful as its predecessors. This is not a set of traditional mysteries, but rather a series about a female-owned detective agency in Botswana. The continuing tale is still fresh and strong, even after six books.

Readers are strongly encouraged to discover the series from the beginning with The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. It’s very easy to enjoy the likable characters and African setting. The pleasure is in the pace and view of the series which is like a literary stop to smell the roses.
