The It Girl
by Cecily vonZiegesar
Book Review by Amy Coffin
The “It” Girl is Jenny Humphrey, who is seeking a fresh start at a new school for a new year. She spent most of ninth grade on the fringe of popularity at an exclusive New York City school. A combination of luck, connections and poor choices make Jenny a legend on the party scene and in the principal’s office where she’s expelled.

The first book in The It Girl series follows Jenny as her sophomore year begins at the exclusive Waverly Prep boarding school. Since nobody knows her from New York City, Jenny decides to reinvent herself. Author Cecily vonZiegesar gives her title character a fresh start as well in this Gossip Girl spin-off.

Jenny finds that Waverly is full of beautiful, rich teens just like her old school. Upon arrival, she inadvertently finds herself in the middle of a love triangle. She also realizes that she’s inherited the legendary Tinsley Carmichael’s old dorm and roommates. The mysterious Tinsley was expelled last year as well, but no doubt will turn up at some point in the series to make waves.

It’s difficult not to compare The It Girl to Gossip Girl, as there are similarities and differences. VonZiegesar drops clothing labels, booze-filled parties and raging hormones is both series. The characters in The It Girl, however, are not lifelong friends as they are in Gossip Girl. The Waverly group has different histories and backgrounds. These differences allow vonZiegesar to spin bigger drama and better plot lines.

This story line is geared toward teen girls, but is a confirmed guilty pleasure of adult females as well. Fans of Gossip Girl, young adult fiction, or escapist vacation reading will easily get hooked on the It Girl series.
