The Kalahari Typing School for Men
by Alexander McCall Smith
Book Review by Amy Coffin
The Kalahari Typing School for Men is the fourth installment in The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series. The story picks up right where Morality for Beautiful Girls ended. Mma. Precious Ramotswe juggles personal and business responsibilities in her native Botswana.

The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency has some competition in town. A chauvinistic newcomer provides arrogance and amusement in the form of a business rival. Mma. Ramotswe’s assistant, Mma. Matkutsi has an entrepreneurial idea of her own, which provides the book’s title.

Alexander McCall Smith uses the first part of this novel to catch readers up on the development of the regular characters. The actual detective cases arrive late, but that’s just fine because of the story’s charm. The reward isn’t in the end, but in the entire path of the novel.

The entire series should be read in succession for full appreciation of the tale and characters. Readers will enjoy the Botswana setting that shines under Smith’s pen. The Kalahari Typing School for Men is as charming as its predecessors and definitely worth your time.
